~ Inspiration, Old and New

Often I am asked where do I get my design inspiration. Books and magazines are great of course, but people sometimes overlook what is right in front of them. The things they love.

The last trip to Renninger's I bought this vintage green vase for $6. It is the exact green that I love and use in my home. Again, it's one of the those things I liked before I got it home, but now like it even more because it looks like it's been here for a long time.

Beside the little cheapie vase is a handmade plate from a fairly well known (to art show going people) potter/artist who does a lot of art shows. We like green lizards and fell in love with her wonderful art pieces. At $75 this is one of her less expensive pieces and when we looked for something else the next couple of years, she was long sold out of this price range.

The other plate is majolica and antique. This one I also found at Renninger's but didn't buy it there. I searched for a while and found a set of them on Ebay from France and bought them, giving away 2 to my mom and sister and sending out one to someone else who needed one more, and keeping 2, one for me and one of my daughter. I really love this plate!

If I had to design a room using these pieces as my starting point, it would be so easy. I can tell so much about the people who live there from looking at them. And of course the colors are wonderful, too.

The lizard art plate has that Tiffany blue color around the lizard that has really been calling out to me. Very strange, I'm not a blue person at all. But that color makes me want it.

Happy Weekend! I hope Mother Nature is kind to you.

  1. Yes the truth is that beauty is all around us, things do not have to be perfect to show us beauty or how to rejoice.

  2. Those all have beautiful colors, I am not usually a blue person either, but there is something special about the glaze and color combination! Lovely photos, it's always a joy to come here.

    Thank you!

  3. Oddly, I was never really a green person. I found I liked the color in other people's homes but I never could quite figure out where to use it in mine. Now, I'm so in love with that kiwi shade that I used in my kitchen, I'm afraid of over doing it!

That vintage vase is gorgeous. I love the color, but the shape is what really attracts me!

    I always enjoy your blog!

  5. Donna, I love that new vase & what a steal you got it for. I would have snapped that up in a minute too. Looks great with your other pieces. I really love majolica too & would enjoy a collection of those. As always, you put things together so artfully.

  7. How artfully you arrange things...quite like they were purchased together and meant to be. : )
Love the plates...I used to not use much green but this house is full of green touches. Blue, yellow, green...browns and reds...all seem to make room for one another and flow.

That precious vase is wonderful and for 6 dollars!? Wow.

    Have a sweet weekend Donna!

    Hugs,
    Sue

  8. Donna, those are beautiful pieces! I'm inspired just seeing them, and I think that the blue and green really compliment each other well. I am drooling over the Majolica.

I agree with you about sources of inspiration. Mine is probably my majolica, or my Imari. I kind of let those drive my color choices now (if I don't, I tend to get off on tangents). If I stick with colors I find in those pieces, my home seems to stay cohesive (enough :) and I'm happy with those colors.

BTW, I love, love my art piece! It is charming and beautiful (and pleased all of us!). Please stop by my blog when you can...

    Love, Andrea

  12. I think you found a treasure in the little green vase....I like to mix my finds....expensive and cheap. If I like it, it's fine with me.

One of my favorite pieces cost 10 cents at a yard sale.....It a white figurine of two birds....
