Slipcovers - Lots of Ideas! Chairs and More

The Decorated House ~Slipcover Ideas

Slipcovers are magic!
They can change the look and feeling of your room with just a quick change.
If you are making them yourself, you will finds some tutorials among the many links
that I have posted on my slipcovers board on Pinterest.
------------------
For me, since I am better with a hammer than with a sewing machine, it would have been much easier to just reupholster the dining room chairs.  Slipcovers can actually be fairly easy to make, although if you are more skilled a sewing you ca make them  more constructed. I didn't know if I would want to have the chairs with the fabric that was on them again, so I chose to do slipcovers. It is also a great idea if you are trying to keep the chairs' fabric looking good and you want an option that can be easily removed and washed.  For me it was mostly that I wanted a white chair cover, which would allow them to be washed as needed.

Summer Time

The Decorated House - Donna Courtney - Potting Bench

There's no need to tell you that summer is here. By now, almost everyone is feeling the heat, unless you are visiting from way down under of course. The rains have been coming everyday as they often do this time of year, and the weeds and tall grass could not be happier. Fortunately I got some pots planted up with flowers as well. And they too are very happy for the drink.

This little potting bench area has always been a favorite of mine and readers. If you haven't previously seen how easy it is to build by using your fence as the backside, or if you would like to visit again, click the link  for more pictures and a little more information.

It is in need or some cleaning up,  maybe a little paint touch up and cleaning the bench top.  It has been used and little abused over the years. I think it deserves to be spiffed up a little bit.

Celebrating Fall ~ Autumn : Decorating

Fall Decorating - The Decorated House

Fall is loved for its beautiful colors and it is just as wonderful to enjoy those same colors inside your home as well. You can use real and fresh leaves (as in the vase above) or dried magnolia leaves, with their rich color combination of copper and green for the perfect look and colors of Fall. If you use the preserved leaves, you can carry that element into the next season too. Almost everything in the vase is from nature - dried flowers, leaves and feathers along with only a few faux leaves here and there to fill it out. So depending on where you live, you might find everything you need for a pretty arrangement right outside your door!

Fall Autumn Decor - Magnolia Leaf Candle - The Decorated House

Previously I have shown you the magnolia leaf candle wrapped with the leaves all facing on the copper side, and also with the with the copper alternating with green. You gather from Nature and your garden to create a simple, or even more elaborate arrangement than this one. Here I used the candle in a white concrete garden container. It was filled with a floral foam so I could easily stick the leaves, berries and picks into it. It was covered with moss so you can't see the foam. The pumpkins can be painted with either flat white paint, or chalk paint.

The candle arrangement  is on the dining table, but it can easily be moved to your coffee table when it's time to get the table ready for a dinner.

The Decorated House - Fall Decorating White Pumpkins

For the entry table it was simple to remove all the Halloween related elements and keep everything that felt like Fall. The antique books and rusty lock are a wonderful balance of autumn colors against the shiny silver and the white pumpkins. The pumpkins are a mixed of painted, mercury glass, and velvet ones,  giving you a nice range of textures to add more interest.

~ Liberty Enlightening the World - The Statue of Liberty ~ Happy July 4th!

Liberty Enlightening the World - The Statue of Liberty at The Decorated House

This magnificent gift from France is now a symbol that holds a special place in the hearts of many.  It is so hard to believe that Americans turned their back on this incredible gift of the statue as many proclaimed it was just plain ugly. It took the insight and incredible hard work of just a few people to build this stunning sculpture in her home where she is greatly loved today by us. If you get a chance to see a repeat of the PBS show about the statue, you might learn somethings you never knew about it.  Today she still stands as a symbol of what most Americans want for our country.

The words from a poem inscribed on the plaque read:

Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my  lamp beside the golden door!
(The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc.)

Without France, our destiny may have been quite different. The French people also sacrificed greatly for our independence, even if those who were starving had little say about the help France gave to us. The gift of the Statue of Liberty is a constant reminder of
our quest for democracy, equality and compassion.

Enjoy the vintage photos of the Statue of Liberty:

The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. She is a colossal size neoclassical scuplture of a robed woman who represents Libertas the Roman Goddess of freedom. She holds a torch in one hand, and a tabula ansata, or a tablet evoking the law, in the other on which is inscribed the date July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet which Bartholdi decided not to have her holding . This beautiful piece of art was named and designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue was a gift to the United States from the people of France as a symbol of our countries' friendship.

The amazing original copper finish!

Now you can see the patina and oxidation of the copper as we see it today. This is actually after a very long and painstakingly difficult job of cleaning away years of dirt and grime. It took many, many years for the Statue of Liberty to be truly appreciated, but it certainly is today. It remains a stunning piece of sculpture and art.

A huge Thank You! to the France for this beautiful gift.
Happy 4th of July!
